This article views technology broadly in terms of its greatest contribution: textual communication. It argues that well-grounded pedagogy should not just focus on what is ‘new’ in digitally-mediated literacies, but should also focus on what digitally-mediated practices share with all forms of literacy. The article discusses material, social, and individual dimensions of language and literacy, and proposes five pedagogical principles that underlie literacy technologies from the origins of writing to the digital era. These five principles are the basis for a ‘relational pedagogy’ that aims to foster in students an ability to reflect on meaning-making practices broadly, with particular emphasis on how materials and technologies interact with social worlds and individual creativity. Pedagogical implications of these principles are presented to encourage a goal of critical symbolic awareness in twenty-first century language education.
